Finan couldn't help but let a small smirk form on his face at the younger agent's rambling. He'd never been the type of person to ramble or be overly social, but he most certainly could remember starting out as an agent and feeling much like Wilson must be feeling right now. He'd been extremely anxious about fucking up a job, getting fired and losing the only thing he cared about at that point in his life. Finan had met Wilson before today, sometimes seeing her around the station after he'd transferred to Cleveland PD. They'd only talked briefly a few times, which had mostly been Wilson asking questions to learn and Finan patiently enduring the rambling as she would talk her way towards what her actual question was.
He liked her good enough. She was talented, a quick study, and respectful of others... of him. Finan, despite the harsh front and asshole personality he'd like to display, cared about those with the right attitude working with and for him. As Wilson introduced herself to Matthews, he made a mental note to keep a close eye on Wilson during the investigation, making sure she'd not fuck up the crime scene (listen, he liked her, but she's still a rookie, and god forbid rookies and high profile investigations meet), but also making sure she'd learn as much as she could. If he was going to have a rookie around such a strange and likely dangerous case, he would do his damn best to protect his own.
The smirk faded when Matthews responded. He'd half expected her to be short, demeaning and professional with the inexperienced agent, as most FBI agents had done with him and other rookies when he had been younger. Instead she'd actually been polite to Wilson, Finan even noticed the small smile on her face from the corner of his eyes. He appreciated her attitude towards Wilson, although he didn't fully trust how honest it was. The last FBI agent he'd helped on a case about 3 years ago, had done this too. He had started out being very pleasant towards Finan and the other detectives and agents on the case. He'd wurmed his way into their lives and for all appearances, appeared to be honestly wanting to become close with them. Even Finan, whose walls rival the best of them, had let him get close. Too close...
When he drove over a small bump in the road, he was torn from his thoughts, just in time to fully register Matthew's comment on his previous FBI experience. Not really feeling up to another fight and still half with his thoughts in those memories, he shortly responded.
"Great observation skills, princess. Yeah, I've worked a few. Went fine, could have gone better. Last one was the Lawson kidnapping if you've heard of it."
He looked at Wilson in the back mirror of the car, which was dirty as shit and he was so gonna wash his hands when they would leave the car. She seemed to be buzzing with energy and excited but nervous to start working on the case. Before they arrived at the crime scene, she would need to calm down. People are scared of what happened, witnesses are most likely in shock and they'd need to crime scene as calm and organized as possible to be able to deliver the necessary quick results. He didn't want the agent to needlessly worry anyone or miss an important clue in her excitement. He made sure to lock eyes with her in the mirror, briefly of course - he was an asshole maybe but not a irresponsible driver, and stated:
"Hey, Wilson. I know you're excited and nervous, but before we get to the crime scene, I'm gonna need you to do something. Deeply breathe in, breathe out and repeat a few times. Calm yourself, clear your head and go over the case. See if there is anything in particular that stands out and you want to investigate or do at the crime scene. It's always good to have some plan, instead of running around like a chicken without a head. Even if your main job is not necessarily to investigate the scene, talking to people can tell you a lot more sometimes than you might think. This is an important job, and you can't do that job if you're on the ground having a nervous breakdown. So breathe and have a clear picture of the case, can you do that for me?"
He focused fully back on the road, mulled some things over and then quickly added:
"And don't touch anything case related without permission. You touch, you lose your hand."
