Frank tried to make sense of the macabre scene in front of him. He had no idea that badgers were capable of such things! He called out into the room: "Mischievous badgers or other such scavanging creatures! I strongly suggest you vacate this building before I have at you with my metal cudgel! Though I am a gentleman detective and amateur racing car driver, I am unafraid of physical violence if the circumstances call for it!"

Frank scratched his arse with the crowbar to help himself think. No thoughts came. This was a familiar sensation to him. He stared at the scene, hoping to see anything moving or any sort of weapon that a badger might have used to cause such havoc.

Frank's words echoed through the walls of this place, a place that saw countless horrifying acts over the past couple of hours. However, there was no response; all was eerily silent, and there was no one left to answer Frank. Everyone lay lifeless in the reception room. Frank began to search the room, yet perhaps it was the darkness in the crannies, or the dim light emanating from the fire pit wasn't enough, or maybe his glasses needed replacement. Regardless, he couldn't find anything in the reception room area. Still, it appeared that he had time on his side, so he could decide to leave the room and explore further. It would be beneficial to locate a light source or find a way to restore the lights altogether, as the cottage seemed to have electricity —perhaps there was a generator somewhere on the property?

Frank stared into the dim embers of the fire for a time. Perhaps he could stoke the fire back into life to get a better look at the room? Frank pointlessly poked into the fireplace with his crowbar. What he needed was more wood and he didn't know where to get more. Anything would be preferable to loitering in this room, so he decided to have a look for a wood store or coal store. Even better would be to fix the electricity to come back on, but Frank knew that his parents didn't like him playing with electricity. They weren't tolerant of his experiments.

Frank decided to leave the room, and enter the other rooms of the house one by one. Hopefully they were less full of dead bodies and contained wood or a fuse box. Or food. Frank regretted not getting food at the diner. It had been several hours since his last meal and his belly was starting to complain.

Frank, with relative ease, found some wood to add to the fire pit, brightening up the room a little and providing better visibility to access the two bodies that were in a truly gruesome state. Next to the younger man's body, Frank noticed a shotgun, partially covered beneath the man's weight. The firearm appeared to have been fired recently.

His attention was also drawn to a metal coffer on the floor that seemed somewhat out of place in the room, not something that had been on the fireplace a mere moment ago. It was sixteen inches wide and nine inches tall, trough-shaped, unadorned, and mounted on clawed metal feet. The remains of a peculiar-smelling wax seal clung to the edges of the lid.

Moving on, the next room Frank noticed was the kitchen, adjacent to the reception room. Perhaps he would have better luck in there, finding something edible to satisfy his hunger and help him through this challenging night. Is he going to be lucky enough?

Unfortunately, Frank couldn't find any edible food in the kitchen cupboards and various other places. It was mostly empty, with a collection of ingredients that could be used for cooking a meal. It appeared that Emilia's family was definitely a household of ingredients, rather than ready meals and snacks.

The house emitted a strange, eerie atmosphere, and something was unmistakably amiss, but what exactly? Frank noticed a faint light seeping through a crack in the doors to the kitchen that he had left slightly ajar when he entered. What could it be? Was it the same eerie light that had haunted him in the woods earlier, or something entirely different? Perhaps he should consider running, hiding, or using the crowbar he still held to defend himself?

Franks belly rumbled unhappily. He paused to consider the options that had sprung unbidden into his imagination. He considered whether he might be in danger and tried to visualise hiding himself in one of the kitchen cupboards as he did as a child. He looked at his large belly and the option quickly evaporated. Running away was unthinkable. He was a gentleman adventurer and running was out of the question.

Frank hefted his crowbar. A name sprang into his mind: "Vengence". Yes, the crowbars name was vengence and he would give no mercy to whatever manner of badger or robber was likely skulking around outside the kitchen.

Franked calls out "I shall have at thee!" and charges through the kitchen door to face the source of the eerie glow.

In the chaotic moment, Frank collided with his little sister, Charlie, as he rushed towards the door. They collided, causing the lantern she was holding to crash to the ground, shattering into a million pieces and inflicting some minor injuries on both of them. Charlie appeared both petrified and relieved, her expression a mix of anger and fear. She was relieved, knowing that Frank was safe and unharmed.

Behind Charlie, Emilia appeared, filled with terror and uncertainty. She seemed relatively calm, possibly unaware of the events that had transpired in the reception area. Charlie burst out, irritated, saying:
What have you done?!

Frank was shocked! There was indeed a robber, but they were female and eerily identical to Charlie. As he heard the familiar chiding tone of his sister, he realised that this was really Charlie. Frank noticed his arm was still raised and clutching the crowbar. He slowly lowered arm, frowning at the cuts from the lamps broken glass.

Frank responded to his sister, "Charlie! I had asked you to stay in the car while I ensured that all is well. And I have this much to say to you: All is not well. I might go so far as to say that all is a bit fucked." Frank paused to consider Emilia, loitering further back in the hallway. He pondered how to express himself. He continued, "There appears to have been an accident. Miss Emilia, please do not be frightened. I don't know how to put this. Please do not go into the room at the end of the corridor. Two people are there. I fear they are mortally injured and beyond our ability to help." Frank looked towards his sister, pleading with his eyes for some sort of help.

Frank took a deep breath and turned back to Emilia. He began "Emilia, I know this must be hard for you, but I ask you whether you know of anybody who would seek to hurt you or your father. Do you know anything about what has occurred this evening? There is an elderly man, seemingly deceased and then a young man who has seemingly endured some sort of unholy torture." Frank paused to consider whether he should mention the possibility of badgers, but decided against it.

Charlie struggled to lift herself off the ground, attempting to regain composure. The light source was shattered, leaving them in the darkness. If only the generator supplying electricity to the lights could be repaired.
Brother, this is why I came here! It doesn't seem safe outside. There's this weird flash…
Frank acknowledged the challenging situation inside, and Charlie, filled with worry, nodded. Despite the uncertainty, she let Emilia lead the way. Frowning, she turned to Frank and asked:
Is my Papa okay? What happened here? This is my home.
Approaching Emilia, Charlie placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
My Papa had this locked safe in his office. I'm unsure, but he kept valuables there. I can't think of anyone who might want to hurt us, but perhaps someone tried to rob us.
